Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has called for a complete overhaul of India’s education system, saying it needs to be “rebuilt from scratch” to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of students. Expressing concern over repeated examination irregularities and paper leak controversies, the Congress leader said the current system has failed millions of young people and requires comprehensive reforms to restore public confidence.

Addressing students during the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Dehradun, Rahul Gandhi said that education should provide a secure, transparent, and student-centric environment rather than exposing young people to uncertainty and stress. He argued that the recurring examination controversies have caused immense emotional and psychological hardship for students and their families.

Calls for Complete Overhaul of Education System

Rahul Gandhi said piecemeal reforms would not be enough to address the structural problems affecting India’s education sector. According to him, the system must be rebuilt from the ground up to eliminate recurring issues such as examination paper leaks, irregularities in recruitment examinations, and growing insecurity among students.

He stressed that education should be designed around the needs of students, ensuring fairness, transparency, and equal opportunities for all. The Congress leader argued that rebuilding the system would require long-term policy reforms rather than temporary administrative measures.

Student Safety Must Be the Highest Priority

Emphasising the importance of student welfare, Rahul Gandhi said educational institutions should provide an environment where students feel safe, respected, and confident about their future.

He observed that repeated examination controversies have created uncertainty and anxiety among students, many of whom spend years preparing for competitive examinations. According to him, restoring trust in the education system is essential for protecting the aspirations of young people and ensuring that merit remains the basis of academic and professional opportunities.

Concerns Over Repeated Paper Leaks

Referring to recent examination controversies, Rahul Gandhi said paper leaks have become a recurring problem that has affected a large number of students across the country.

He claimed that millions of students have suffered because of repeated examination irregularities over the past decade, resulting in delays, uncertainty, and emotional distress. Such incidents, he said, undermine public confidence in competitive examinations and raise serious questions about the integrity of the education system.

The Congress leader called for stronger institutional safeguards to prevent future paper leaks and ensure that examinations remain transparent and credible.

Educational Institutions Should Remain Independent

Rahul Gandhi also argued that educational institutions should function independently and remain free from political influence. According to him, universities, examination bodies, and educational organisations should operate with autonomy to maintain fairness and public trust.

He said decisions concerning education should prioritise students’ interests and academic excellence rather than political considerations. Independent institutions, he added, are essential for maintaining the credibility of examinations and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.

Appeal for Student-Centric Reforms

The Congress leader advocated reforms that place students at the centre of policymaking. He said the education system should focus on reducing stress, encouraging innovation, promoting critical thinking, and ensuring that every student has access to a fair learning environment.

According to Rahul Gandhi, reforms should go beyond examinations and include improvements in institutional governance, transparency, accountability, and support systems for students.

He emphasised that a modern education system must prepare young people for future challenges while protecting their mental well-being and academic aspirations.

Political Debate Over Education Intensifies

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks come amid growing national debate over examination reforms and the integrity of competitive recruitment processes. Opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns over paper leaks and examination irregularities, while the government has stated that it is taking steps to strengthen the examination system and prevent malpractice.

The issue has remained a major point of discussion among students, educators, and policymakers, with many calling for stricter safeguards and institutional reforms to restore confidence in public examinations.

Focus on Restoring Students’ Trust

Concluding his address, Rahul Gandhi reiterated that rebuilding the education system is essential for safeguarding the future of India’s youth. He said students deserve an environment where hard work, merit, and honesty determine success rather than uncertainty caused by repeated examination controversies.

The Congress leader maintained that ensuring student safety, institutional independence, and transparent examinations should be at the heart of future education reforms. As discussions over examination integrity and educational policy continue, his call for rebuilding the system “from scratch” has added fresh momentum to the ongoing national debate on creating a more secure, fair, and student-focused education system.
