Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States in December to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Florida, according to people familiar with preparations.
The G20 Summit is scheduled for December 14 and 15 at Trump National Doral in Miami. US President Donald Trump is set to host the meeting of G20 leaders. However, the Indian government has not yet formally announced Modi’s participation or his travel plans.
If the visit goes ahead, it would provide an opportunity for India and the United States to hold discussions on several bilateral and global issues.
Bilateral Meeting With Donald Trump on Cards
A meeting between Modi and Trump is also expected on the sidelines of the summit. Sources cited in recent reports said the two leaders could hold bilateral talks during Modi’s visit.
The possibility of a meeting has gained attention because India and the US are currently engaged in discussions on trade and other areas of bilateral cooperation.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor had also indicated earlier this month that Trump would likely want to meet Modi during the G20 gathering. Gor said Modi would be among the leaders Trump would particularly want to meet and suggested that the visit could involve more than the main G20 discussions.
Trade Talks Could Feature in Discussions
Trade is expected to remain an important issue in India-US engagement. The two countries have been negotiating a broader trade agreement, although several differences remain.
Recent US measures linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil have added another layer of complexity to the economic relationship. The United States has considered additional tariffs on countries purchasing significant quantities of Russian crude, while India has emphasised its energy-security requirements.
Against this backdrop, a Modi-Trump meeting could provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss outstanding trade concerns. Any progress, however, would depend on the ongoing negotiations.
Quad Summit Could Also Take Place
The G20 gathering could also provide a setting for a possible meeting of the Quad leaders. The Quad brings together India, the United States, Japan and Australia.
Preparations for a Quad leaders’ meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit are reportedly underway. However, officials have not formally confirmed that such a meeting will take place.
If organised, the meeting would add a strategic dimension to Modi’s proposed US visit. The four countries regularly discuss issues involving the Indo-Pacific, technology, critical supply chains and regional cooperation.
Wider India-US Engagement Continues
The possible Modi-Trump meeting comes as New Delhi and Washington continue high-level engagement.
India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is also scheduled to travel to the US for the G20 Trade Ministerial. Trade discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are expected to form an important part of that engagement.
Meanwhile, the two governments continue to work through differences involving tariffs, energy and market access. These issues have become increasingly important for the broader economic relationship.
Modi May Combine G20 Visit With Other Engagements
Reports also suggest that Modi’s December international tour could include visits to other countries. The reported itinerary may begin in Germany before continuing to the United States and Canada, with Belgium also potentially included.
In the US, the G20 Summit would be the central multilateral engagement. A meeting with Trump could then provide space for direct discussions on bilateral matters.
However, these travel plans remain subject to official confirmation.
Focus on India-US Relations
A potential Modi-Trump meeting would come at a significant stage in India-US relations. Both countries maintain extensive cooperation in trade, defence, technology, energy and strategic affairs.
At the same time, disagreements over tariffs and Russian oil purchases have created challenges for the relationship. Recent US legislation proposing higher tariffs on countries buying Russian oil has further complicated the trade discussions.
The December G20 Summit could therefore offer an important diplomatic setting for the two governments to address these issues.
For now, Modi’s US visit remains unconfirmed. If the trip is finalised, however, the G20 Summit in Miami is expected to be the main focus, with a possible bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump likely to attract considerable attention.
