PM Modi To Launch Rs 2,500-Crore Projects In Punjab On Friday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Punjab on Friday to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth more than Rs 2,500 crore. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving railway connectivity, and accelerating the Centre’s development agenda in the state. According to officials, the projects have been planned to enhance public services while supporting long-term economic and social growth across Punjab and the northern region.

The Prime Minister’s visit carries both developmental and political significance. Besides unveiling major infrastructure initiatives, it marks another important engagement with Punjab at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking to expand its presence in the state. However, government officials have maintained that the primary objective of the visit is to dedicate key public welfare projects that will directly benefit citizens.

Major Boost for Healthcare Infrastructure

One of the highlights of the Prime Minister’s visit will be the inauguration of advanced healthcare facilities at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. These projects, valued at nearly Rs 1,200 crore, are expected to significantly strengthen medical services, research, and education in northern India.

Among the facilities to be inaugurated is the Advanced Mother and Child Centre, which has been developed to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare. The new centre will substantially increase PGIMER’s capacity to manage high-risk pregnancies and is expected to handle more than 6,000 such deliveries every year. It will provide specialised treatment, modern equipment, and improved healthcare services for women and children from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and other neighbouring regions.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Advanced Neurosciences Centre at PGIMER. This modern facility is designed to provide specialised treatment for neurological disorders while reducing waiting periods for patients. Equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, the centre is expected to strengthen the institute’s capability in neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroscience research.

Foundation Stone for Critical Care Hospital

In addition to inaugurating completed facilities, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Hospital Block under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission.

The proposed hospital block is aimed at improving emergency and critical care services. It will help strengthen preparedness for future public health emergencies while providing advanced treatment facilities for critically ill patients. Officials believe that the project will enhance the region’s overall healthcare capacity and improve access to quality medical services for thousands of patients every year.

The healthcare initiatives reflect the Centre’s broader objective of expanding world-class medical infrastructure across the country while ensuring better healthcare accessibility in every region.

Sant Ravidas Express to Enhance Rail Connectivity

Another major announcement during the visit will be the launch of the new Sant Ravidas Express, a train service connecting Chheharta in Amritsar with Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

The train has been introduced to facilitate easier travel for devotees visiting the Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Temple at Seer Govardhanpur in Varanasi. Railway authorities have approved the service, which will operate three times every week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

The launch assumes particular importance ahead of preparations for the 650th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Ravidas next year. The Ravidasi community has a significant presence in Punjab, especially in the Doaba region, and the new train is expected to make religious travel more convenient for thousands of pilgrims.

Apart from religious tourism, the new service is also expected to improve passenger connectivity between Punjab and eastern Uttar Pradesh, benefiting students, workers, and other travellers.

Railway Station Modernisation Underway

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to launch the redevelopment of 75 railway stations across the country under the Centre’s station modernisation programme. Among them is the historic Jalandhar Cantonment railway station, one of Punjab’s oldest railway stations dating back to the British era.

The redevelopment project aims to transform railway stations into modern transport hubs equipped with better passenger amenities, improved accessibility, enhanced waiting areas, digital facilities, and upgraded infrastructure. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to modernise India’s railway network while improving passenger experience.

Officials say that station redevelopment projects are also expected to contribute to local economic development by generating employment during construction and encouraging commercial activity around the stations.

Development-Oriented Visit

Government officials have described the Prime Minister’s Punjab visit as primarily development-oriented, with a strong emphasis on improving healthcare, transportation, and public infrastructure.

The projects being launched are expected to deliver long-term benefits by increasing access to specialised medical care, strengthening railway connectivity, and improving public facilities. Together, they represent significant public investment aimed at supporting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.

The Centre has consistently highlighted infrastructure development as one of its key priorities, and these projects align with broader national programmes focused on healthcare expansion, railway modernisation, and regional development.

Political Significance of the Visit

While the visit is centred on development projects, political observers also view it as significant because it comes as the BJP seeks to strengthen its organisational presence in Punjab. It will be Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to the state following the party’s decision to pursue an independent electoral strategy in Punjab.

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister visited Dera Sachkhand Ballan and met Sant Niranjan Das, the spiritual head of the Ravidasia community. Friday’s visit is expected to further strengthen the government’s outreach to various communities in the state while reinforcing its focus on development-led governance.

Looking Ahead

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab is expected to leave a lasting impact through projects worth over Rs 2,500 crore that focus on healthcare, railway connectivity, and infrastructure development. From expanding PGIMER’s medical capabilities to introducing the Sant Ravidas Express and modernising railway stations, the initiatives aim to improve essential public services while supporting the state’s long-term development.

As these projects become operational, they are expected to enhance healthcare accessibility, strengthen transport networks, and generate new opportunities for economic growth. The visit underscores the government’s emphasis on infrastructure-led development and its commitment to improving the quality of life for people in Punjab and the wider northern region.
