Tension prevailed along the Assam-Mizoram border after truck drivers and transport workers blocked a key highway, alleging repeated harassment, intimidation and restrictions faced by commercial vehicle operators entering Mizoram.
The protest was staged at Lailapur in Assam’s Cachar district, disrupting the movement of goods along National Highway 306, an important route connecting Assam with Mizoram. More than 100 truck drivers reportedly participated in the agitation, leaving several Mizoram-bound goods vehicles stranded along the interstate corridor.
Truckers Block Highway Over Safety Concerns
The protest began on August 31 and continued for several days as truck drivers refused to resume the transportation of goods to Mizoram without assurances regarding their safety.
The protesting drivers alleged that Assam-registered commercial vehicles, particularly trucks carrying sand and other goods, had faced repeated obstruction and difficulties after entering Mizoram. They also claimed that some drivers had been subjected to intimidation and harassment.
Truckers demanded a permanent mechanism to ensure the safe and unhindered movement of commercial vehicles carrying valid documents. They maintained that their concerns should be addressed before authorities attempted to restore the movement of goods along the highway.
Tension Rises as Authorities Attempt to Clear Road
The situation became tense when officials from the Cachar district administration arrived at Lailapur and attempted to clear the blockade and restore traffic movement.
The protesting truckers opposed the move and reportedly parked heavy vehicles across the road, preventing commercial consignments from proceeding towards Mizoram. The drivers argued that the administration should focus on resolving their safety concerns rather than forcing them to resume transportation.
Police and civil administration personnel were deployed in the area to monitor the situation and prevent any deterioration in law and order.
Goods Traffic and Essential Supplies Affected
The blockade disrupted the movement of commercial goods between Assam and Mizoram, raising concerns over the supply of essential commodities to the neighbouring state.
NH-306 serves as a crucial transportation corridor for Mizoram, with a significant volume of goods and supplies entering the state through Assam. The suspension of commercial traffic resulted in numerous trucks being stranded on both sides of the route.
Transport workers said they would continue their agitation until authorities from Assam and Mizoram took concrete steps to address their grievances and ensure the security of truck drivers.
Allegations Linked to Entry Restrictions on Trucks
The dispute was also linked to complaints regarding restrictions imposed on vehicles, particularly sand-laden trucks, entering Mizoram.
Truck drivers alleged that some Assam vehicles were stopped and prevented from reaching their destinations. They claimed that drivers were, in some cases, asked to unload their consignments and return to Assam.
Mizoram authorities, however, maintained that vehicles entering the state must carry proper documents. Officials said the issue was discussed during talks with representatives of the protesting truckers and authorities from both states.
Talks Held to Resolve Assam-Mizoram Border Dispute
Following the tense situation at Lailapur, officials initiated discussions with the truck drivers and transport representatives to find a solution.
A meeting involving administrative officials from Assam and Mizoram, concerned departments and representatives of truckers’ unions was eventually held to address the concerns raised by the protesters.
The discussions focused on ensuring the safety of vehicles and drivers entering Mizoram while also ensuring compliance with documentation requirements for interstate transportation.
Blockade Eventually Lifted After Assurances
The truck drivers later called off their protest after receiving assurances from the Mizoram administration that their concerns regarding safety and alleged harassment would be addressed.
Following the discussions, goods traffic along NH-306 began resuming, allowing stranded commercial vehicles to continue their journey towards Mizoram.
The truckers, however, indicated that they would closely monitor the implementation of the assurances. They warned that they could reconsider their future course of action if drivers continued to face similar difficulties while transporting goods into Mizoram.
