The event was attended by Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, Cabinet ministers, elected representatives and other dignitaries.
Tamang travelled to Keralam with ministers and a delegation from Sikkim to attend the occasion. His presence reflected the close association between the Sikkim government and Mathur, who served as the Himalayan state’s Governor before receiving his new appointment.
The ceremony formally marked Mathur’s assumption of office as Keralam Governor. He succeeded Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu as part of a wider reshuffle of gubernatorial appointments announced by President Droupadi Murmu.

Mathur served as the 18th Governor of Sikkim from July 31, 2024, until October 19, 2026. During his tenure, he worked alongside the state administration on constitutional and public responsibilities.
His transfer to Keralam was announced on October 12, 2026, when the President’s Secretariat released a list of appointments and transfers involving several state Governors. Under the same reshuffle, Dushyant Kumar Gautam was appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim.
Gautam took the oath as Sikkim’s 19th Governor on October 19 at Lok Bhavan in Gangtok. Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque, administered the oath in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, ministers, legislators, judges and senior officials.
The transition brought Mathur’s tenure in Sikkim to a close and opened a new chapter in his public service in Keralam.

Before the swearing-in, Tamang had met Mathur in New Delhi on October 13 to congratulate him on his appointment. During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed appreciation for Mathur’s guidance and contribution during his time in Sikkim.
Following the appointment, Tamang also conveyed his best wishes through a social media message. He expressed confidence that Mathur’s administrative experience, public service and commitment to the country would help him fulfil his new responsibilities with wisdom, dedication and integrity.
The Chief Minister wished the Governor success in his new assignment and hoped his tenure would contribute to the progress, prosperity and well-being of Keralam’s people.
The messages highlighted the goodwill between the outgoing Governor and Sikkim’s leadership as the state prepared for a change at the constitutional level.
Padmanabhaswamy Temple Visit and Prayers for Sikkim
During his visit to Thiruvananthapuram, Tamang accompanied Mathur to the renowned Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The Chief Minister offered prayers for the peace, prosperity and well-being of the people of Sikkim.
He also prayed for the state’s continued progress, happiness and harmony. Describing the temple visit as a blessed experience, Tamang expressed hope that the blessings of Lord Padmanabhaswamy would guide and protect the people of the Himalayan state.
The visit added a personal and spiritual dimension to the official programme. While the swearing-in marked Mathur’s constitutional transition, the temple visit allowed Tamang to express his hopes for Sikkim’s future during the occasion.
Who Is Om Prakash Mathur?
Om Prakash Mathur hails from Bedal village in Rajasthan’s Pali district and is a graduate of the University of Rajasthan. He began his public career as a pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and subsequently held several prominent political positions.
Mathur served as a senior functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including as national general secretary with responsibility for Gujarat. He also represented Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha before taking up the gubernatorial assignment in Sikkim.
His appointment as Keralam Governor places him in a constitutional position responsible for carrying out the duties assigned to the Governor under the Indian Constitution. These include functions connected with the state legislature, government formation and other constitutional processes.
With Mathur assuming office and Dushyant Kumar Gautam taking charge in Sikkim, the recent appointments have reshaped gubernatorial leadership in both states. Tamang’s participation in the ceremony and his subsequent prayers for Sikkim underlined the continuing relationship between the state leadership and its former Governor as Mathur begins his new responsibilities in Keralam.
