Tripura festive ration distribution has triggered a political confrontation after Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), of spreading misinformation about the availability of free food items at ration shops. On October 25, 2026, the minister defended the state government’s festive welfare initiative, saying supplies were reaching fair-price shops across Tripura and urging political leaders to verify facts before making public allegations.
The controversy comes as the state government distributes free flour, sugar and semolina to eligible ration cardholder families during the festive season. Although the government has maintained that the distribution process is progressing, reports of shortages and delays have raised concerns among some beneficiaries.
Tripura Festive Ration Distribution Sparks Political Row
Addressing the media, Chowdhury alleged that several CPI(M) leaders had falsely claimed that semolina, flour and sugar were unavailable at ration shops across the state. He also questioned claims that opposition representatives had contacted him about the alleged shortages but received no response.
The minister said political criticism was acceptable but should be based on verified information. He accused some leaders of misrepresenting conversations with him and described their conduct as hypocrisy.
Chowdhury further challenged the opposition to identify comparable free festive ration schemes implemented during the previous Left Front government’s decades in power. He argued that providing essential commodities without charge reflected the present government’s commitment to supporting households during important festivals.
The allegations have intensified the political debate over the implementation of the scheme, with the availability of supplies emerging as the central issue.
Government Announces Free Food Items for 9.92 Lakh Families
The Tripura government approved the festive ration initiative earlier in October to help households manage additional expenses during the festive period. The programme covers approximately 9.92 lakh ration cardholder families across the state.
Under the announced allocation, each eligible family is entitled to receive:
- 2 kg of flour (maida)
- 1 kg of sugar
- 500 grams of semolina (suji)
The state government has earmarked approximately Rs 9 crore for the initiative, according to the minister’s October 25 statement. Earlier announcements placed the estimated expenditure between Rs 9.35 crore and Rs 9.85 crore.
The programme is intended to provide financial relief during Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja and Bhai Phonta, when household spending on food and celebrations often increases.
According to Chowdhury, this is the second time the government has introduced a similar welfare initiative since taking office.
Minister Shares Latest Update on Ration Supplies
Chowdhury said approximately 59 per cent of ration shops across Tripura had received semolina and flour by October 25, while supplies for the remaining outlets were being transported.
He explained that flour and semolina are milled within the state, whereas sugar must be procured from outside Tripura. The first sugar consignment had arrived shortly before the latest announcement, and distribution had officially begun under the supervision of senior Food and Civil Supplies Department officials.
The minister said flour and semolina would reach the remaining ration shops within three to four days. He indicated that sugar distribution would take another five to ten days to cover the state, while also assuring beneficiaries that the remaining supplies would be delivered within the announced timeframe.
These timelines were provided by the minister and represent the government’s expected schedule, rather than confirmation that every household had already received the items.
Different Beneficiary Categories Covered Under the Scheme
The minister clarified that the three commodities would not be distributed under identical eligibility conditions.
Flour and sugar are intended for all ration cardholder families, including those classified as Above Poverty Line (APL), Below Poverty Line (BPL), Priority Group and Antyodaya. Semolina is reserved for Antyodaya, Priority Group and BPL beneficiaries.
This distinction is important for families checking their entitlements at local fair-price shops. Beneficiaries should confirm the applicable allocation for their ration card category and seek clarification from the Food and Civil Supplies Department if promised items remain unavailable.
The government has also appealed to the public to avoid relying solely on unverified social media claims about the distribution programme.
Opposition Concerns Highlight Delivery Challenges
Despite the minister’s defence, reports published on October 25 indicated that some beneficiaries were still waiting for promised commodities. CPI(M) representatives also staged a protest in the Mohanpur area, alleging that the announced benefits had not reached some ration shops.
Separate complaints reportedly emerged from Krishnapur East Laxmipur, where consumers raised concerns about the availability of essential items, including sugar and rice.
These allegations have not independently established the extent or cause of the reported shortages. However, they highlight the importance of distinguishing between supplies dispatched by the government and commodities actually received by beneficiaries.
Transparent stock information, timely deliveries and clear communication from ration shop operators could help resolve confusion and ensure that eligible households receive the announced assistance.
As the festive season continues, the effectiveness of Tripura’s ration initiative will ultimately depend on whether the promised commodities reach families across the state within the stated deadlines. While Chowdhury has rejected the opposition’s allegations and defended the government’s record, beneficiaries will be looking for tangible results at their local ration shops. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the distribution drive fulfils its promise of providing meaningful festive relief to nearly 9.92 lakh families.
