Joi Barua NASA project has connected an Assam-born singer-composer with one of the world’s most ambitious space-science efforts, bringing music inspired by stellar explosions into an international orchestral production. Barua has contributed melodies to Cosmic Rhapsody, a multimedia project linked to NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) mission, creating an unusual bridge between astrophysics, music and visual storytelling.
How Joi Barua entered the cosmic project
The collaboration links Cosmic Rhapsody with NASA’s COSI mission, led by principal investigator John Tomsick at the University of California, Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. COSI is designed to study soft gamma rays and help scientists understand where elements such as iron and aluminium are produced and distributed across the universe.
For Barua, the connection came through the creative framework of Cosmic Rhapsody. The project was conceived by storytelling and songwriting duo Susan Lim and Christina Teenz Tan. French composer Manu Martin serves as its chief composer, orchestrator and arranger. The wider production combines orchestral music, pop songs, animation and a science-based narrative.
Barua’s role is specific but central. He composed melodies for two key songs, “Star Among the Cosmic Clouds” and “Confetti Storm”, and co-composed “Confetti Star-Ion” with Martin.
From supernova science to music
The creative concept draws heavily on the life and death of stars. A major theme of the production is the way supernovae contribute to the creation and dispersal of elements that can later become part of new stars, planets and other cosmic structures.
Barua said the scientific basis of the project gave deeper meaning to the songs. He noted that the music, although born from emotion and poetry, ultimately reflected astrophysical ideas about nucleosynthesis and the production of elements inside stars.
That idea also influenced the way he approached the music. Rather than presenting a supernova simply as the destruction of a star, the project treats the event as part of a larger cycle of creation. Cosmic material is scattered into space, creating the ingredients for what may come next.
A creative meeting of science and sound
The project is designed to make complex scientific ideas accessible through artistic expression. Its storyline follows a fictional human and an artificial intelligence travelling through space while searching for solutions to Earth’s environmental challenges. Live symphonic music, cinematic animation and popular music are combined to build the narrative.
This approach gives Barua an opportunity to work beyond conventional film and independent music. His contribution sits within a larger international production involving composers, orchestral musicians, scientists, animators and performers.
Assam connection extends beyond Joi Barua
One of the notable aspects of the Joi Barua NASA project is that another Assam-born creative is also involved.
Animator and director Samudra Kajal Saikia is working on the project’s visual component. His animation helps translate the movement of exploding stars, cosmic dust and other scientific concepts into visual storytelling. The collaboration therefore gives the production a distinct connection to Assam through both music and animation.
Barua has previously built a career across Indian popular music, playback singing and composition. His credits include work connected with films such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, DevD, Agent Vinod, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He has also composed for projects including Margarita with a Straw and Laila Majnu.
Hollywood Bowl premiere planned for 2027
The international project is heading towards two major milestones. Cosmic Rhapsody is scheduled for its US premiere at the Hollywood Bowl on July 27, 2027, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and acclaimed pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The performance will be followed by the planned orbital launch of NASA’s COSI mission from Cape Canaveral.
The timing gives the artistic project an unusual connection with the scientific mission that inspired it. Music audiences will encounter the cosmic story on stage, while the COSI mission is intended to investigate the astrophysical processes behind some of the same phenomena.
A wider journey for Assamese creativity
The project also reflects how regional artistic voices can enter international collaborations built around science and technology. Barua’s contribution combines his musical background with a production that reaches well beyond conventional genre boundaries.
