Mizoram Tourism Sees Strong Surge With 5.37 Lakh Visitors by June

Mizoram tourism recorded a strong rise in visitor arrivals during the first six months of 2026, with nearly 5.37 lakh tourists visiting the northeastern state between January and June, Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar told the Mizoram Assembly on August 27. The figure includes more than 5.28 lakh domestic visitors and around 8,700 foreign tourists.

The latest numbers underline the growing popularity of Mizoram as a tourism destination and come as the state government steps up investment in infrastructure, homestays, promotion and community-based tourism.

Mizoram tourism draws mostly domestic visitors

According to Hmar, domestic tourists made up the overwhelming majority of visitors recorded during the first half of the year. More than 5.28 lakh domestic travellers visited Mizoram, while foreign tourist arrivals stood at around 8,700.

The figures indicate rising interest among Indian travellers in Mizoram’s natural landscapes, cultural attractions and local experiences. The state is also seeking to strengthen its appeal to international visitors through improved tourism infrastructure and promotional activities.

Separately, data released by the Union Tourism Ministry showed 4,94,362 domestic tourist visits and 7,389 foreign tourist visits in Mizoram between January and June 2026. The state-level figure cited by the minister is therefore higher than the data reported in the central government’s tourism statistics.

Government expands tourism infrastructure

The increase in visitors comes alongside a major push to improve tourism infrastructure across Mizoram.

Hmar said the state has received Rs 610.78 crore in central assistance for tourism development under the current Zoram People’s Movement government. Fourteen tourism infrastructure projects are currently being implemented, while central support is also being provided for the establishment of 199 homestays during the current financial year.

The expansion of homestays is expected to provide tourists with more accommodation options while allowing local households and communities to benefit directly from tourism-related income.

The government is also focusing on community-based tourism, skill development and capacity building. Officials believe these measures can help create a wider network of local tourism entrepreneurs and service providers.

Aizawl promoted as India’s winter destination

Another major part of the state’s tourism strategy is the promotion of Aizawl as the “Winter Capital of India.”

The government is using the Winter Festival and other events to strengthen Aizawl’s identity as a winter tourism destination. The strategy is aimed at attracting visitors beyond traditional travel periods and encouraging longer stays in the state.

Mizoram is also working with the Central Young Mizo Association to spread tourism awareness and provide information to visitors. The Tourism Department has increased inspections and regulation of accommodation facilities such as hotels and homestays.

The state has also been promoting events and cultural festivals as part of its broader tourism strategy. Government plans include greater use of social media marketing and coordination between departments to improve the visitor experience.

Safety remains a key tourism priority

The Tourism Minister also told the Assembly that the government had not received reports of tourists facing difficulties or causing disturbances during their stay in Mizoram. This safety record is an important factor as the state seeks to attract more visitors.

Mizoram has introduced measures aimed at improving tourist safety and service standards, including the Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020, and legislation governing the registration of tourist businesses. The Tourism Department has also held discussions with church organisations to encourage cooperation in welcoming and assisting visitors.

Tourism seen as an economic growth driver

The government sees the increase in tourist arrivals as more than a boost for the hospitality industry. Hmar said continued tourism growth could generate employment, increase demand for locally produced goods and encourage private investment.

This approach fits with Mizoram’s wider focus on community-led tourism. Chief Minister Lalduhoma has previously highlighted community tourism involving self-help groups and local communities as an important part of the state’s economic development strategy.

The latest visitor figures also build on strong tourism performance in 2025. Mizoram recorded 6,79,607 tourist visits between April and December 2025, including 9,606 foreign visitors, according to the state Governor’s budget-session address.

With visitor numbers continuing to rise, the focus is now on ensuring that infrastructure, accommodation, safety standards and local participation keep pace with demand. The state government’s efforts to expand homestays and tourism projects could help spread the economic benefits beyond major urban centres.

The strong first-half performance gives Mizoram a positive foundation for the rest of 2026. If the current momentum continues, Mizoram tourism could become an increasingly important contributor to employment, local enterprise and the state’s wider economic growth.
