Nagaland first five-star hotel marks a major milestone for the state’s tourism and hospitality sectors, with the inauguration of Polo Hotel Kohima opening new opportunities for private investment, employment and local businesses. The 56-room property was inaugurated by Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on October 24, 2026, at Kohima. The development strengthens the state’s premium accommodation options as it seeks to attract more domestic and international visitors.
Polo Hotel Kohima Opens a New Chapter for Tourism
The opening of Polo Hotel Kohima marks the entry of Shillong-based Polo Hotels Group into Nagaland. The property is located in the New Minister Hill and Aradura Hill area of Kohima and is designed to cater to leisure travellers, business visitors and guests attending major cultural events.
The hotel is expected to strengthen Nagaland’s hospitality infrastructure by providing premium accommodation and professional services. Governor Nand Kishore Yadav said investment in hospitality could create livelihood opportunities, encourage entrepreneurship and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
He also highlighted the importance of providing quality accommodation to visitors interested in Nagaland’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and festivals.
However, the hotel’s formal five-star classification remains subject to the prescribed rating and classification process, according to state officials.
Public-Private Partnership Supports Investment
The hotel project reflects Nagaland’s efforts to encourage private participation in tourism infrastructure. The partnership between the state’s Tourism Department and Polo Hotels Group was established through a 30-year lease agreement signed in 2023.
The collaboration follows a public-private partnership (PPP) model, allowing private hospitality expertise to contribute to the development and management of tourism facilities.
Nagaland Tourism and Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along welcomed the hotel as an important addition to the state’s hospitality sector. He said such investments could strengthen tourism, generate government revenue and encourage other businesses to explore opportunities in Nagaland.
The government has also called on entrepreneurs to invest in the state’s future, with improved hospitality infrastructure expected to support wider economic activity.
Hotel Design Showcases Naga Culture
A key feature of Polo Hotel Kohima is its emphasis on local culture and architectural identity. Rather than adopting a standard luxury hotel design, the property incorporates traditional Naga artwork, woven textiles and architectural influences associated with community life.
The hotel overlooks Kohima and the surrounding valley, with its glass-fronted lobby and guest rooms offering views of the landscape. Facilities include an infinity pool, while elements of traditional Naga architecture are reflected in different parts of the building.
The property also houses Tring Tring, an all-day diner operated by the hotel group. Its menu includes Indian, Oriental and Western dishes, alongside a seven-course Naga menu highlighting regional cuisine.
The focus on local food, art and design aims to offer visitors an experience connected to Nagaland’s cultural identity while maintaining contemporary hospitality standards.
Local Employment and Businesses to Benefit
The opening could create opportunities beyond the hotel’s immediate operations. Polo Hotels Group chief executive and whole-time director Deval Tibrewalla said most employees at the Kohima property were local residents.
The group also intends to source products and services from local weavers, artists, farmers and carpenters. Such arrangements could help small businesses participate in the tourism supply chain and create additional income opportunities for communities.
Hospitality development can generate demand for transport, food supplies, handicrafts, cultural experiences and other visitor services. Strong links between hotels and local enterprises will therefore be important in ensuring that tourism growth benefits residents.
Training and employment opportunities could also help young people develop skills in hospitality, customer service and tourism management.
Nagaland First Five-Star Hotel Targets Year-Round Visitors
The hotel is positioned to serve as a base for visitors exploring Kohima’s historical landmarks and Nagaland’s natural attractions. These include Second World War heritage sites, Khonoma village and Dzükou Valley.
It is also expected to cater to tourists attending the annual Hornbill Festival, which draws visitors to Nagaland during the first ten days of December. The festival provides an important platform for showcasing the state’s music, traditional performances, crafts, food and cultural diversity.
Polo Hotels Group has indicated that it wants to promote Nagaland beyond the festival season, helping attract visitors throughout the year. The group, founded in Shillong in 1991, has established hospitality operations across parts of the Northeast and Kolkata.
Its entry into Kohima could encourage further investment in tourism-related services, although sustained growth will depend on connectivity, visitor demand and the development of complementary infrastructure.
The opening of the hotel represents an important step in Nagaland’s effort to strengthen its tourism economy. By combining premium accommodation with local culture, employment opportunities and private-sector participation, Polo Hotel Kohima could help broaden the state’s appeal to travellers and investors. Its long-term success will depend on maintaining service standards, supporting local businesses and turning seasonal interest in Nagaland into year-round tourism.
