The Manipur Thang-Ta Championship is set to bring together university athletes from across India as the National Sports University (NSU) hosts the All India Inter-University Thang-Ta Championship 2026–27 in Imphal from October 26 to 28. The three-day national competition will feature men’s and women’s events, with approximately 350 participants expected from 31 universities, highlighting Manipur’s traditional martial art on a national platform.

The championship will take place at the Indoor Stadium of the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. Organised in line with the Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU) annual sports calendar for 2026–27, the event is expected to provide university-level athletes with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills while promoting an indigenous martial art deeply rooted in the state’s cultural heritage.

National Sports University to Host Championship

The National Sports University will organise the competition as part of its efforts to promote sports and support athlete development. NSU Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chaudhary announced the event during a press briefing at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex on October 25.

According to the announcement, 31 universities have reported for the championship, with around 350 participants expected to compete. The participation of institutions from different parts of the country will give the event a national character and create opportunities for university athletes to compete in a traditional Indian martial art.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 26 at 4 pm. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has consented to attend the ceremony as the chief guest, according to the organisers.

Thang-Ta: A Traditional Martial Art of Manipur

Thang-Ta is one of Manipur’s most recognised traditional martial arts, combining physical discipline, combat techniques and the use of traditional weapons. Its name comes from two Manipuri words: Thang, meaning sword, and Ta, meaning spear. The martial art reflects generations of knowledge and practice passed down through the state’s cultural traditions.

Beyond its combat techniques, Thang-Ta represents courage, discipline and respect for tradition. Its continued presence in organised sporting competitions offers younger generations an opportunity to learn about and appreciate an important part of Manipur’s heritage.

The Manipur Thang-Ta Championship will bring this indigenous discipline into the spotlight by giving university athletes from across the country an opportunity to compete in a sport closely associated with the northeastern state.

Men’s and Women’s Events to Feature University Athletes

The national championship will feature competitions for both men and women, allowing athletes from participating universities to showcase their abilities on a common platform.

With approximately 350 participants expected, the tournament is set to bring together a sizeable gathering of student-athletes, coaches and university representatives. The participation of 31 universities also highlights the growing reach of traditional martial arts within India’s university sports system.

For the athletes, the event provides an opportunity to gain competitive experience, test their skills against participants from other institutions and represent their respective universities at the national level.

The tournament will also draw attention to the role of educational institutions in preserving indigenous sporting disciplines. University competitions can help traditional sports reach younger audiences while creating pathways for talented practitioners to participate in organised events.

Championship Supports Promotion of Indigenous Sports

The decision to host the competition in Imphal places Manipur’s cultural heritage at the centre of a national sporting event. The state has a strong sporting tradition, and Thang-Ta remains an important part of its identity.

Hosting athletes from different parts of India can encourage greater awareness of the martial art and its historical significance. It also creates opportunities for participants to experience Manipur’s sporting culture beyond the competition arena.

The National Sports University’s role as host is significant in this context. Dedicated sports education institutions can contribute to developing athletes, strengthening competitive opportunities and supporting traditional disciplines through structured sporting programmes.

The championship is being held in accordance with the AIU sports calendar for 2026–27, connecting the event with the wider inter-university sports framework. Such competitions allow traditional disciplines to feature alongside other organised sporting activities and help sustain interest among student communities.

Imphal Prepares for Three Days of Competition

The Indoor Stadium at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex will serve as the venue for the championship from October 26 to 28. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 4 pm on October 26, with the chief minister expected to attend as chief guest.

The university has invited members of the public and media representatives to attend the opening ceremony, according to reports published ahead of the event.

As preparations conclude, attention will turn to the participating universities and the performances of their athletes over the three-day competition. The event is expected to provide a platform for sporting excellence while reinforcing the importance of preserving traditional martial arts.

With 31 universities reported to have registered their participation and approximately 350 athletes expected, the championship places Manipur at the centre of an important national university sporting event. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen the visibility of Thang-Ta among students and sports enthusiasts across India.

The tournament beginning on October 26 is therefore significant not only for the participating athletes but also for the continued promotion of Manipur’s indigenous sporting traditions. By bringing university competitors together in Imphal, the National Sports University will help showcase a martial art that remains closely connected to the state’s cultural identity.
