Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to review border security and the implementation of India’s new criminal laws during his visit to West Bengal on Saturday. The visit is part of his three-day tour of the state and is expected to focus on strengthening border management, improving law enforcement, and assessing the implementation of key governance initiatives.
According to official sources, Shah will hold meetings with senior officials from the state administration, central security agencies, and the Border Security Force (BSF). The review comes amid continued emphasis on enhancing security along the India-Bangladesh border and ensuring the effective enforcement of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
Focus on Border Security
A major agenda of the Home Minister’s visit is the review of security arrangements along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. Shah is expected to visit the Jumagach Border Outpost in Siliguri, where he will interact with BSF personnel and assess the operational preparedness of the force.
Officials said discussions will include border fencing, surveillance infrastructure, cross-border infiltration, smuggling, and coordination between the BSF and other security agencies. Strengthening security along sensitive border stretches remains a priority for the Union government.
Review of New Criminal Law Implementation
Shah will also review the implementation of the country’s new criminal laws, which replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.
Senior police and administrative officials are expected to brief the Home Minister on the progress of implementing the new legal framework, including training programmes, investigation procedures, digital integration, and coordination among law enforcement agencies.
The review aims to identify challenges faced during implementation and ensure the new laws are being enforced effectively across the state.
Meetings with Senior Officials
During the visit, the Home Minister is expected to chair high-level meetings with senior officials from the state administration, central agencies, and security forces.
The discussions are likely to cover law and order, governance, border management, crime prevention, and administrative coordination. Officials are expected to present updates on ongoing initiatives and measures being taken to improve public safety and internal security.
The review meetings form part of the Centre’s efforts to strengthen coordination between various agencies responsible for maintaining security and implementing national policies.
Development Projects Linked to BSF
Besides security reviews, Shah is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several development projects related to the Border Security Force.
These projects are aimed at improving infrastructure, operational facilities, and living conditions for BSF personnel deployed along the international border. Officials said better infrastructure would enhance both operational efficiency and the welfare of security personnel.
First Comprehensive Visit After Assembly Elections
The ongoing tour marks Amit Shah’s first extensive visit to West Bengal following the BJP’s victory in the recent Assembly elections.
Officials said the visit reflects the Centre’s focus on reviewing governance, security, and development in the state. Along with border security, discussions are expected to cover administrative coordination, public safety, and implementation of central initiatives.
Importance of the Border Review
West Bengal shares a long international border with Bangladesh, making border management a critical aspect of national security. The region presents challenges related to illegal cross-border movement, smuggling, trafficking, and border infrastructure.
The Home Minister’s review is expected to assess existing security measures while exploring ways to strengthen surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordination between security agencies operating in the region.
Government Emphasises Security and Governance
The review of border security and criminal law implementation highlights the Union government’s continued emphasis on strengthening internal security and improving governance mechanisms. Officials believe regular reviews help identify operational challenges and improve coordination between the Centre, security agencies, and state authorities.
As Amit Shah continues his West Bengal visit, the outcome of Saturday’s meetings is expected to shape future strategies relating to border management, law enforcement, and the implementation of the new criminal laws. The discussions are also likely to reinforce efforts to modernise policing, enhance administrative efficiency, and strengthen national security along one of India’s most sensitive international borders.
