Assam CM reviews projects in a high-level meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, held in New Delhi on July 4, 2025. The session focused on the progress of key highway, bridge, and logistics infrastructure projects in Assam.
The interaction marked a crucial step as Assam CM reviews projects directly with central leadership to accelerate timelines and remove bottlenecks.
According to officials, the meeting covered ongoing National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) projects, bridge expansions over the Brahmaputra, and plans for multi-modal logistics parks. Both leaders agreed on the importance of faster implementation to support economic growth in the Northeast.

Multiple Road and Bridge Projects Under Review
During the meeting, the Chief Minister shared status updates on several national highway expansions, including NH-27, NH-17, and NH-715. These highways form vital corridors connecting Assam to Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and West Bengal.
Sarma also discussed the construction of the Jorhat–Majuli bridge, Dhubri–Phulbari bridge, and the proposed Guwahati ring road. Gadkari assured full support and asked the NHAI team to fast-track pending approvals.
Importantly, both leaders agreed to hold monthly joint reviews between the Assam PWD and the Ministry to ensure steady progress. As Assam CM reviews projects, coordination between state and central agencies will be crucial in maintaining momentum.
Focus on Connectivity and Logistics
Beyond roads, the conversation touched on enhancing Assam’s logistics ecosystem. Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of integrated logistics parks at Silchar and Jogighopa, which will serve as trade hubs linking to Bangladesh and Bhutan.
The government also plans to develop dedicated freight corridors and improve last-mile road access to river ports and rail terminals. As a result, Assam could emerge as a major logistics gateway for the entire Northeast region.
Gadkari noted that Assam has immense potential to become a transportation hub and assured funding support under the PM Gati Shakti Yojana.
Environmental Clearances and Land Acquisition Discussed
One of the key challenges raised was land acquisition delays in certain forest zones. The CM requested faster clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. In response, Gadkari directed the regional NHAI teams to prepare alternative alignments in ecologically sensitive areas.
Furthermore, the Assam CM mentioned the need for compensation packages that are timely and transparent. This will help avoid legal hurdles and ensure smoother project execution.
Because Assam CM reviews projects frequently at the state level, he committed to resolving any remaining local issues that might affect construction schedules.
Emphasis on Green Infrastructure
In line with national sustainability goals, the meeting also included discussions on green highway models. These include solar-powered lighting, tree plantation along highways, and the use of plastic waste in road construction.
Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed Assam’s willingness to pilot such models in select stretches. Gadkari appreciated the idea and recommended expanding the initiative across the Northeast.
This alignment ensures that as Assam accelerates development, it does so responsibly and with an eye on long-term sustainability.
A Model for Cooperative Governance
The meeting ended with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to close coordination between the Centre and Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the Union Minister for his continued support to Assam’s development vision.
By regularly engaging with central ministries, Assam CM reviews projects in a proactive and results-oriented manner. This model of cooperative federalism has helped Assam secure quick project clearances and dedicated central funding.
The CM also invited Gadkari to visit Assam later this year to inaugurate completed sections of key roadways and inspect proposed project sites.
