Prime Minister Modi's Anticipated Visit to Inaugurate Tata Semiconductor Project in Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Assam in December or January to formally inaugurate the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

The announcement comes as the ambitious semiconductor project reaches a significant stage, with the first clean room completed and pilot chip production already underway. The facility is expected to play an important role in Assam’s industrial development and contribute to India’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

First Clean Room Completed, Pilot Production Begins

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the first clean room at the facility is ready and that pilot chip production has commenced.

The development marks an important milestone for the project, which is being established at Jagiroad. Clean rooms are essential for semiconductor manufacturing and testing because they maintain controlled environments to prevent contamination during sensitive production processes.

Sarma said the Prime Minister is expected to formally inaugurate the facility in December or January, although a final date has not yet been announced.

Tata Semiconductor Project in Jagiroad

The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility is one of Assam’s major industrial projects. Located in Morigaon district, it is being developed with an investment of approximately Rs 27,000 crore.

The project is designed to undertake semiconductor assembly and testing, an important stage in the chip manufacturing value chain. Semiconductor chips are used in a wide range of products, including smartphones, computers, automobiles, communication equipment and electronic devices.

The facility is expected to support the development of a semiconductor ecosystem in the Northeast while creating opportunities for skilled employment and industrial investment.

Assam Government Reviews Project Progress

The Assam government has been monitoring the progress of the semiconductor facility alongside other industrial development initiatives in the Jagiroad region.

During an earlier visit to Morigaon, Sarma inspected the project site and reviewed the progress of construction. Officials from Tata Semiconductor briefed him on the status of the facility.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the proposed Mega Industrial Park in the area and instructed officials to ensure efficient execution of construction-related work.

The industrial park and semiconductor facility form part of the broader effort to develop Jagiroad as an industrial centre.

Significance for Assam’s Industrial Development

The semiconductor project is expected to expand Assam’s industrial base beyond its traditional sectors. It could also encourage supporting businesses, technical training institutions and supply-chain services to develop around the facility.

For India, the project is part of the wider effort to increase domestic semiconductor capabilities and reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing for critical electronic components.

The anticipated inauguration by Prime Minister Modi would mark a major public milestone for the project. With pilot production underway, attention is now focused on the next stages of development and the formal commissioning of the facility.

The project’s progress is also expected to strengthen Assam’s position in India’s emerging semiconductor industry.
