Assam flood crisis worsens as missing persons remain untraced

Speaking after reviewing the situation and visiting relief camps, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the official death toll had reached 41 but warned that the number could rise further because 70 to 80 people are still missing. He described the overall situation as “quite serious” and said authorities were continuing extensive search and rescue efforts.
According to the Chief Minister, the unprecedented flooding was largely triggered by a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland, which sent massive volumes of water downstream into Assam. Continuous rainfall has further aggravated the situation, leaving several districts submerged and disrupting normal life.
Scale of devastation continues to grow
The impact of the floods has spread across large parts of the state. More than nine lakh people have been affected, with over 1,800 villages across 25 districts experiencing severe flooding. Thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter in relief camps established by the administration.
Floodwaters have also damaged roads, bridges, agricultural land, public infrastructure and thousands of homes. Livestock losses have added to the hardship faced by rural communities, while transportation and communication have been disrupted in several areas.

State agencies, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration and volunteers, continue rescue operations in affected districts. The Centre has announced that an inter-ministerial team will visit Assam to evaluate the extent of the damage and prepare an assessment for further assistance. The state government continues to coordinate closely with central agencies as floodwaters remain high in several river systems.

Rivers remain in spate amid continued rainfall
Several major rivers, including stretches of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, continue to flow above the danger mark in different parts of Assam. Authorities remain concerned that additional rainfall and water released from upstream reservoirs could worsen flooding in downstream districts.
Officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and follow evacuation advisories whenever issued. Continuous monitoring of river levels remains a key priority for disaster management agencies.

During his visits to flood-hit districts and relief camps, Chief Minister Sarma assured affected families that the government would continue providing all necessary assistance. He stated that rescue operations would remain active until every possible effort had been made to locate missing persons.
The Chief Minister also said that rehabilitation, infrastructure restoration and compensation measures would be implemented after floodwaters recede. Officials have been instructed to conduct detailed damage assessments to ensure timely support for affected residents.
