The Centre has approved Rs 993.64 crore for the development of National Highway-10 between Rangpo and Ranipool in Sikkim, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on October 7. The project will upgrade the key corridor into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, along with several major engineering interventions designed for the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The development is expected to improve road connectivity to Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim while addressing recurring problems caused by landslides, road sinking and difficult geological conditions.
NH-10 to Get Major Infrastructure Upgrade
The Rangpo-Ranipool stretch will be developed into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders. The project will include tunnels, viaducts, bridges and cut-and-cover sections.
According to the project details, the work covers the existing carriageway from approximately km 53.50 at Rangpo to km 79.371 at Ranipool. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has already initiated the procurement process for the project.
The project is expected to address some of the major challenges faced by NH-10, particularly vulnerable stretches prone to landslides and sinking.
Slope Protection to Strengthen Highway Safety
One of the major components of the project will be comprehensive slope-protection measures.
NH-10 passes through steep and geologically sensitive Himalayan terrain, making the road vulnerable to landslides, slope failures and other disruptions, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
The planned tunnels, viaducts and slope-stabilisation works are intended to make the corridor more resilient and reduce the impact of vulnerable sections on traffic movement.
The upgraded road is expected to provide safer and more reliable travel for residents, visitors and commercial vehicles.
Better Connectivity to Gangtok
The Rangpo-Ranipool corridor is particularly important because Rangpo serves as a major gateway to Sikkim, while Ranipool provides access to Gangtok and other parts of the state.
Improving this section of NH-10 is therefore expected to strengthen connectivity between the state’s entry point and its capital.
The Centre has described the project as a step towards providing safer, faster and more resilient connectivity to Gangtok and across Sikkim. Akashvani News
Boost for Tourism and Agriculture
The highway upgrade is also expected to have an impact beyond transportation.
Sikkim’s economy depends significantly on tourism, agriculture and horticulture, all of which rely on dependable road connectivity. A more resilient NH-10 could make the movement of tourists and agricultural and horticultural produce easier.
The improved corridor is also expected to facilitate the movement of essential goods, particularly because road transport remains crucial for supplying Sikkim’s mountainous communities.
Better connectivity could also reduce the disruption caused when vulnerable sections of the highway are affected by landslides or other natural events.
Strategic Importance of NH-10
The Rangpo-Ranipool stretch also has strategic significance.
NH-10 is an important road connection between Sikkim and the rest of the country and plays a role in the movement of defence personnel and supplies towards strategically important areas of the state.
The Centre has highlighted this strategic function while announcing the infrastructure upgrade.
Strengthening the highway’s resilience is therefore expected to support both civilian transportation and strategic logistics.
Project Already Moves Towards Tendering Stage
The infrastructure announcement comes as NHIDCL has already initiated the tendering process for the Rangpo-Ranipool project.
The official tender describes the work as widening and developing the existing carriageway into a two-lane road with paved shoulders, together with tunnels, viaducts and treatment of vulnerable sliding and sinking zones.
The tender places the estimated value of the work at around Rs 706.63 crore, while the Centre’s overall approved project allocation is Rs 993.64 crore.
The pre-bid meeting is scheduled for October 27, while bids are due in November.
A Major Connectivity Push for Sikkim
The Rs 993.64-crore NH-10 project represents a major infrastructure intervention on one of Sikkim’s most important road corridors.
With tunnels, bridges, viaducts and slope-protection measures planned along the Rangpo-Ranipool section, the project aims to address both connectivity and the recurring challenges posed by the Himalayan terrain.
Once completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to provide more dependable access to Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim while supporting tourism, agriculture, essential supplies and strategic transportation.
