The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to hold a core committee meeting in Lucknow to discuss candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The meeting comes months before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and as the party begins preparations for the Upper House polls.
The BJP is expected to discuss candidates for eight of the 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh that will go to polls on October 16, 2026. The Election Commission has scheduled voting for that date.
BJP Core Committee to Discuss Candidate Names
The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh core committee is expected to meet in Lucknow on Monday, September 28. Senior state leaders will discuss possible candidates for the Rajya Sabha seats during the meeting.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary and state organisation general secretary Dharampal Singh are among the leaders expected to participate.
The state leadership is expected to prepare panels of potential candidates before forwarding the names to the BJP’s central leadership. The central leadership will take the final decision on the nominations.
Ten Rajya Sabha Seats to Go to Polls
Uttar Pradesh will elect members for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in the October 16 election. Eight of these seats are currently held by the BJP, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) hold one seat each.
The terms of several sitting Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh are ending. Among the BJP members whose terms are due to expire are Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh and Neeraj Shekhar.
One additional UP seat became vacant after BJP leader Dinesh Sharma resigned from the Rajya Sabha following his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
As a result, the upcoming election will involve both seats reaching the end of their terms and the vacant seat.
BJP Begins Selection Process
The Lucknow meeting forms part of the BJP’s candidate-selection process. The party has already held discussions at the central level regarding potential candidates, according to reports.
State leaders will now consider possible names and prepare panels for the seats that the BJP plans to contest. The central leadership will subsequently examine the panels before announcing the final candidates.
The selection process is taking place alongside preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Rajya Sabha Polls Ahead of 2027 Assembly Election
The Rajya Sabha election has attracted attention because it will take place months before Uttar Pradesh votes in the Assembly election.
The Upper House election uses an electoral college made up of elected members of the state legislative assembly. Therefore, the strength of different parties in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly will influence the allocation of Rajya Sabha seats.
The upcoming election will provide political parties with an opportunity to assess their legislative numbers and coordinate their respective strategies ahead of the larger Assembly contest.
The Indian Express has reported that parties are viewing the October Rajya Sabha election as an important political exercise before the 2027 Assembly polls.
BJP Holds Eight Existing Seats
Of the 10 Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha seats going to polls, eight currently belong to the BJP. The remaining two are held by the SP and BSP.
The BJP’s numerical strength in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly will therefore play an important role in the election. However, the final outcome will depend on the votes cast by elected legislators and the candidates nominated by the parties.
The BJP’s central leadership will make the final decision on its nominees after considering the panels prepared by the state unit.
SP and BSP Also Face Rajya Sabha Decisions
The Rajya Sabha election will also require decisions from the opposition parties.
The SP currently holds one of the 10 seats going to polls. The party will need to determine its candidate and coordinate its legislative strategy for the election.
The BSP also faces a decision over its Rajya Sabha representation. Its sitting Rajya Sabha member Ramji Gautam’s term is scheduled to end in November. The party currently has no MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, making its position in the upcoming election a subject of political discussion.
The BJP, SP and BSP will therefore all be closely watched as the nomination process moves forward.
BJP Strengthens Organisation Ahead of UP Polls
The BJP has also stepped up organisational activity in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
Earlier this month, the party’s state leadership held a core group meeting in Lucknow with senior central and state leaders. The discussions focused on coordination between the government and the party organisation and strengthening grassroots outreach.
The party has also increased its outreach programmes across different sections of the electorate.
The Rajya Sabha candidate-selection process is now another major organisational task for the state unit.
Central Leadership to Take Final Call
The Lucknow meeting is expected to produce a list of potential candidates rather than announce the final nominees immediately.
According to reports, the state unit may prepare a panel of three names for each of the eight seats that the BJP expects to contest. The proposed panels will then go to the party’s central leadership for a final decision.
This process will allow the BJP leadership to consider different candidates before making the nominations official.
Election Scheduled for October 16
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for the 10 Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha seats on October 16. The same day will also see polling for one Rajya Sabha seat from Uttarakhand and a by-election for a vacant Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal.
The formal election process has therefore already begun, with parties now working on candidate selection and legislative coordination.
For the BJP, the immediate focus is on finalising its nominees for Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, the party is preparing its organisation for the 2027 Assembly election.
The Lucknow core committee meeting is expected to be an important step in that process, as the state leadership considers potential Rajya Sabha candidates and sends its recommendations to the central leadership.
