Lalduhoma ZPM president is now the new leadership arrangement in Mizoram, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma appointed president of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) on September 21. The party also announced a new set of office-bearers for the 2026–28 term, bringing an early change to its organisational structure.
The appointments were announced at a function at the ZPM office in Aizawl. Thangchungnunga, secretary of the ZPM Val Upa Council (VUC), formally introduced the new leadership team. The VUC is the party’s highest decision-making body and was entrusted with selecting the new office-bearers.
Lalduhoma ZPM president after leadership reshuffle
Lalduhoma succeeds Lalliansawta as ZPM president. Lalliansawta has remained inactive for some time because of health concerns, prompting the party to bring forward its leadership change.
The party’s existing office-bearers were originally expected to continue until next year. However, the ZPM decided to shorten their tenure as some senior leaders were unable to remain active. Senior vice-president W Chhuanawma had also sought leave from his party post in April, citing persistent health concerns.
The latest restructuring gives Lalduhoma a formal organisational role alongside his position as chief minister. The arrangement marks a change from the party’s earlier practice of maintaining a distinction between the ZPM president and the chief minister.
New ZPM office-bearers announced
Along with Lalduhoma, the party announced several other key appointments for the 2026–28 term.
Former Mizoram Assembly Speaker and current State Planning Board vice-chairman Dr Kenneth Chawngliana has been appointed senior vice-president. Hrangturzo MLA and Chief Minister’s political adviser Lalmuanpuia Punte has been named vice-president.
Lunglei West MLA T. Lalhlimpuia has been appointed treasurer. The appointments are part of the wider reorganisation undertaken after health-related absences affected the functioning of some members of the previous leadership team.
The changes also give the party a refreshed leadership structure as it prepares for the next phase of its political and organisational activities.
ZPM changes rule to allow CM to hold party post
The appointment of Lalduhoma as party president followed a constitutional amendment by the ZPM earlier this month.
On September 8, the party said its headquarters executive committee had amended Clause 1 of Article 21 of its constitution. The earlier provision barred ministers from holding office-bearer positions in the organisation.
The amendment created an exception for the chief minister, allowing Lalduhoma to hold an elected office-bearer position in the ZPM while continuing to head the Mizoram government. The relaxation does not extend to other ministers, who remain barred from holding elected party posts under the existing provision.
The constitutional change cleared the way for Lalduhoma to take over the party presidency. It followed a decision by the ZPM executive committee to entrust the VUC with appointing party leaders and office-bearers instead of holding internal elections for the posts.
Leadership shift comes ahead of 2028 polls
The ZPM’s leadership restructuring comes as the party looks ahead to the 2028 Mizoram Assembly elections. Earlier in September, Home Minister K Sapdanga had indicated that the party was considering a new leadership arrangement and holding discussions on its organisational structure.
At that stage, Lalduhoma had emerged as a possible choice for the party presidency. The formal appointment on September 21 has now confirmed that change.
The move places the chief minister at the head of both the state government and the ruling party. It also gives the ZPM a consolidated leadership structure after vacancies and health-related absences affected several senior party positions.
What the new structure means for ZPM
The appointment of Lalduhoma ZPM president brings the party’s political and organisational leadership closer together. While the constitutional amendment specifically permits the chief minister to hold a party office, the restriction on other ministers remains unchanged.
For the ZPM, the immediate task will be to strengthen its organisational structure and maintain coordination between its party leadership and government. The newly appointed office-bearers will serve for the 2026–28 term, giving the party a new leadership team as it moves towards the next Assembly election.
With the new appointments now in place, Lalduhoma ZPM president becomes a defining feature of the party’s revised organisational structure. The leadership change also signals a new phase for the ruling party as it prepares to manage government responsibilities while strengthening its organisation ahead of the 2028 electoral cycle.
