AGMC MBBS seats have received a major expansion for the 2026–27 academic session, with Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) getting approval for 100 additional undergraduate medical seats. The latest approval will raise the college’s annual MBBS intake from 150 to 250, creating more opportunities for students seeking medical education in Tripura and the wider Northeast.
AGMC MBBS seats to rise to 250
The approval marks a significant expansion of AGMC’s undergraduate medical programme. According to a report published on September 21, the college will now admit 250 MBBS students annually, compared with its earlier intake of 150.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha welcomed the development and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their support. The Chief Minister said the increase would create greater opportunities for students from Tripura while strengthening the state’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
The latest decision follows a broader effort by the Tripura government to expand medical education capacity and improve healthcare infrastructure. In May, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare sanctioned Rs 273.46 crore for the expansion and development of AGMC. The package included plans for 100 additional MBBS seats and 83 postgraduate seats across 19 speciality disciplines.
Infrastructure expansion supports seat increase
The expansion of AGMC MBBS seats comes alongside investments aimed at strengthening the infrastructure needed to support a larger student intake.
The May 2026 funding package was intended to support both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at AGMC and its associated Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. Reports said the Centre would support infrastructure expansion linked to the additional MBBS capacity, while the project also included provisions for increasing postgraduate seats.
The development comes at a time when the state is also adding facilities at AGMC and GBP Hospital. On September 21, Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated a new Intensive Care Unit at the Super Speciality Block and a modern Central Sterile Services Department at the hospital. The upgrades are aimed at improving critical-care capacity, sterilisation and hospital services.
These developments are important because a higher MBBS intake requires adequate teaching facilities, clinical training opportunities, faculty and hospital capacity.
Tripura expands medical education capacity
AGMC is not the only medical institution contributing to the growth of medical education in Tripura. Before the latest increase, Tripura had three medical colleges with substantial undergraduate capacity.
Tripura Medical College and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College have each been reported with annual intakes of 150 MBBS students. The addition of 100 seats at AGMC would therefore significantly increase the state’s overall undergraduate medical capacity.
The state government has been seeking greater medical education capacity for several years. In January 2026, Saha said Tripura was pursuing approval for 100 additional MBBS seats and was also considering the establishment of another medical college. At the time, he said the state had 350 MBBS seats across its three medical colleges.
More opportunities for medical aspirants
The increase in intake is expected to provide more opportunities for students who qualify through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG). It could also reduce the need for some students from Tripura to seek medical education outside the state.
AGMC has expanded considerably since it began operations. The college initially had 100 MBBS seats and later received approval to increase its intake to 150. The latest decision represents another substantial step in that expansion.
The institution also offers postgraduate education. Government information released previously stated that AGMC had 89 postgraduate seats across 20 disciplines, while the 2026 expansion plan included 83 additional PG seats across 19 speciality areas.
The expansion of medical education is closely linked with healthcare delivery. More medical graduates can eventually contribute to the state’s pool of doctors, including in district, rural and remote areas. Government officials have also highlighted the role of AGMC and its graduates in strengthening healthcare services across Tripura.
With the approval for 100 more seats, AGMC is set to become a 250-seat MBBS institution from the 2026–27 academic session. The expansion, backed by infrastructure investment and new hospital facilities, marks a significant development for medical education in Tripura and could widen access to undergraduate medical training for students across the Northeast.
